CO2 Emission Tracking

CO2 emission tracking is the process of quantifying greenhouse gas emissions generated by an organization’s activities, such as energy use, transportation, and business operations. This enables companies to identify their environmental impact and make informed decisions to reduce their carbon footprint.

How This Workflow Works

This workflow calculates CO2 emissions for a software company by combining data on electricity and HVAC usage, employee commuting, and business expenses. It uses two calculation strategies—one based on direct activity data and another on financial expenditure—to estimate emissions, then presents the results in an interactive dashboard.

Key Features:

  • Calculate emissions using both activity-based and cost-based approaches
  • Attribute emissions to specific sources such as energy, commuting, and business operations
  • Aggregate and compare emissions by time period and by employee
  • Visualize emissions data through interactive charts in a dashboard

Step-by-step:

1. Calculate Emissions from Energy and Operations:

The workflow computes emissions from electricity and HVAC usage by multiplying recorded consumption data with government-supplied emission factors. It also estimates emissions from business activities like advertising and market research by applying emission coefficients to financial expenditure data.

2. Estimate Employee Commute Emissions:

Employee commuting emissions are calculated by matching each employee’s commute mode and distance with the appropriate emission factor. The workflow aggregates these results to provide daily and mode-specific emission summaries.

3. Aggregate and Summarize Emissions:

Emissions from all sources are combined and summarized by different categories, such as by month, by employee, and by emission scope. The workflow computes total, average daily, and per-employee emissions to support further analysis.

4. Visualize and Share Insights:

The workflow presents the results in an interactive dashboard, featuring area charts, bar charts, and pie charts. Users can explore emissions trends over time, compare sources, and view key metrics such as annual totals and averages per employee.
