The disruptions to normal business we’ve seen in the last year will be disrupting datasets for years to come. Basic forecasting and demand planning will suffer, as erratic spikes and drops in demand from 2020 skew sales history, the main variable in demand planning in SAP. 

Teams are going to need to sync up their ERP and sales data with external datasets for additional analysis to validate or update their forecasts. For example, to better understand and account for demand in 2020, analysts will want to consider factors like hospitalization rates, employment rates, and lockdown restriction schedules. For SAP customers, this means extracting data from SAP using Theobald connectors and processing it in an analytics platform like KNIME. In KNIME, you can connect to any number of data sources through APIs, databases, and flat files and integrate them with SAP sales history, demand plans, and master data. 

Once the data is combined and prepared, analysts can understand the market changes and impacts on demand in order to model more accurate demand plans, which can be uploaded back into SAP. Updating demand plans and otherwise loading data into SAP is a great example of turning insights to action to create value.
